Why does my voltage tester beep exclusively when the lights are turned off?

The voltage tester emits a beep only when the lights are off due to the presence of residual voltage in the electrical circuit.

When the lights are turned off, the circuit may still carry a small amount of voltage, often referred to as "phantom voltage."

This residual voltage can be detected by the voltage tester, causing it to beep even though the lights are not actively powered.

It's essential to be cautious when interpreting the results of the voltage tester and to verify the absence of live voltage using additional testing methods before performing any electrical work.
